Similarly, much thought and care went into the construction and design of the medical units on campus.  These units were segregated by sex, and included brightly lit bay dormitories and fully equipped surgical suites.  Below is an enhanced photo of the Women’s Hospital for a postcard.

The design of these buildings was to create the opposite effect of an institutional poor-house.  These buildings represented the tranquil country manor that truly appealed to Victorian sensibilities, places of asylum and rejuvenation afforded typically to royalty and the privileged.  But in Richmond, Indiana, anyone from any walk of life who was suffering could come to a place like this.
