Of the most notable losses were the grand Triplet Building, the Men's and Women’s Hospital, the Physician Library, and the Conference Center. Below is a photo of the Triplet Building for women from the Richmond State Hospital Museum.
No one will ever see a medical facility built with such detail and splendor these days. Contemporary aesthetics for patients have largely gone by the wayside, but was a top priority for designers of the asylums who knew that for many patients, buildings like these could be “home” for many years.
